Section 8 Associations: Put Your CIN on Every Member-Facing PDF
Many new associations in India register as Section 8 companies: not-for-profit companies under the Companies Act, 2013. It gives them a clear legal identity and a CIN. Yet their certificates and receipts often show only a logo and a nickname.
That is a missed chance for credibility, and depending on the document, a compliance gap.
What a CIN tells people
A CIN has 21 characters. Take U94110TS2026NPL215996 as an example:
| Part | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Listing status | U | Unlisted company |
| Industry code | 94110 | Activity code (here, business and employers’ membership organisations) |
| State | TS | Registered in Telangana |
| Year | 2026 | Year of incorporation |
| Type | NPL | Not-for-profit licence company (Section 8) |
| Number | 215996 | Registration number |
Anyone can look the CIN up on the Ministry of Corporate Affairs portal. When it is printed on a certificate, a member, a client or an authority can verify that the association is real.
What the law expects
Section 12 of the Companies Act, 2013 asks companies to show their name, registered office address and CIN on business letters, bill heads, letter paper, notices and other official publications. Membership certificates, receipts and AGM notices fall naturally into that set. Your company secretary or CA can confirm specifics for your documents.
Where to show it
- Membership certificate: legal name, CIN, membership number, validity.
- Receipts: legal name, CIN, receipt number, amount, purpose.
- Notices and AGM circulars: legal name, registered office, CIN.
- Email footers and app login screen: legal name and CIN in small text.
Set it once, print it everywhere
Legal name and CIN as settings, used on every PDF and email.
Short name vs legal name
Members know you by a short name like “AICR”. That is fine for the app and the logo. But PDFs that carry legal weight should use the full legal name, “All India Car Rentals”, with the CIN. AICR uses its short name in the app and the full name plus CIN on every certificate, receipt and email footer.
Make it a setting, not a template edit
If the CIN is typed into a Word template, it will be wrong somewhere the day details change. In software, legal name, CIN and registered address should be settings that feed every document automatically.
A certificate that matches the government register is worth more to a member than one with a nicer border.
