PWA vs Play Store: Which App Should Your Association Launch?
Every committee eventually asks: “Can we have our own app on the Play Store?” It sounds official. But for most associations, a Play Store app built from scratch is slow, expensive, and leaves out members with iPhones.
Here is how the two options compare, and what we recommend.
The two options
- Native app: built separately for Android and iPhone, published through Google Play and the Apple App Store.
- PWA (progressive web app): one app that installs from a link on any phone, with a home-screen icon, full-screen mode and notifications. It can also be listed on Google Play.
Side by side
| Native app | PWA | |
|---|---|---|
| Build cost | High (two apps) | Included with the platform |
| Time to launch | Weeks to months, plus store review | Days |
| iPhone | Separate App Store approval | Add to Home Screen from Safari |
| Updates | Members must update | Automatic on next open |
| Install | Search the store, download size | Tap a link from WhatsApp |
| Your branding | Yes | Yes (your name, logo, colours) |
| Play Store listing | Yes | Optional, by wrapping the PWA |
What members actually do in the app
Pay dues, download a receipt or certificate, read a notice, show a QR pass at an event, look someone up in the directory. None of this needs deep phone features. A PWA handles all of it, and installs from the same WhatsApp message you already send.

Adoption beats app stores
The hard part is not publishing an app. It is getting 300 members to open it. What works:
- Login with phone number, no new password.
- Send the install link with something useful: “Your certificate is ready, download it here.”
- Make one thing app-only, like the event QR pass or the receipt.
- Brand it as yours. Members trust “AICR” more than an unknown vendor name. See why white-label matters.
Our recommendation
Launch a branded PWA first. If members ask to find it on Google Play, list the same app there later. Build a separate native app only if you outgrow what the PWA can do, which for most associations never happens.
The best app for your members is the one they install from the WhatsApp message they already got.
